Description
Esa-Pekka Salonen and his
Philharmonia Orchestra end their nine-month series, City of Dreams
(Vienna 1900-1935) with this performance of Berg's first opera, Wozzeck
at Paris' Théâtre des Champs-Elysées.
A chilling and dramatic masterpiece, it is the
apex of Viennese musical Expressionism. It draws on Berg’s own
experiences of World War I and charts the eponymous hero's desperate
descent into paranoia and insanity, using an intensely complex series
of musical forms to express everything that the characters themselves
cannot.
